Morals & Manners

Course Instructor:  Mr. William Michael
Course Description:  It was once common knowledge that "Youth is the time to accustom both body and mind to right methods of life." Today, children are seen as uncontrollable monsters who have the right to do as they please, but this is nothing more than the moral destruction of children. Children must be formally taught good morals and manners and made to practice them that good habits may be formed and bad habits may be avoided.  In this course, we diligently study an excellent systematic text of good Christian morals and manners.

Mythology

  • Course Instructor:  Mr. William Michael
  • Course Assistants:  none
  • Course Description:  Many suggest that the myths of ancient times were mere inventions designed to entertain readers and earn praise for poets.  Such opinions, however, contradict the poets, who claimed inspiration for many of their fables and served  the powers and spirits they spoke of.   For Christians, the value of learning ancient mythology is twofold.  First, inasmuch as there are many reasons to study ancient history literature, it is necessary to know the divine characters and the famous stories about them that are assumed to be know by the ancient writers.  Second, the use of mythological stories as personifications of true ideas, experiences, etc., provides students with a great treasury of illustrations that serve speaking and writing very well.  Topics in this course include:  the celestial gods and goddesses, the terrestrial gods and goddesses, nymphs, rural deities, the infernal deities, the fates, the furies, the judges and monsters of hell, and much more.

  • Course Description:  The history of music is one dominated by the Holy Spirit, inspiring the development of the world's most famous music in all generations.  In this course, we study an excellent text written by one of Christendom's great composers, Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924), who is widely known for his arrangements of the Gospel canticles (see below).  We will study the complete history of music from a Christian perspective with our aim being to know the history, to become acquainted with the greatest musical composers and compositions, and to understand present state of music for future composition and performance.

Drawing

  • Course Instructor:  Mr. William Michael
  • Course Assistants:  None
  • Course Description:  The study of drawing is sadly neglected today because leisure time is commonly passive--watching videos or listening to music--rather than learning and practicing the fine arts.  The ability to draw is a great skill that must be studied systematically and practiced regularly to be mastered.  Money spent on "live" drawing lessons in rarely more productive than the private study of excellent written guides can be.  This course provides students with an excellent, systematic guide through the art of drawing that, if studied and practiced, will make mastery attainable for any student.
